The country of origin is where the goods were manufactured or produced. However, the country of provenance is the one from which the goods were shipped—that is, where the transport began.

The origin of the goods is one of the elements considered when calculating customs duties; depending on the country of origin, a standard, reduced, or even zero tariff rate may be applied.
